How to Nail Your Next Family Photo Session (Without the Stress!)
If the thought of getting your family dressed, out the door, and behaving for photos makes you break a sweat, you are not alone. Most parents arrive at a photo session feeling a little nervous. As a lifestyle photographer, my goal isn't to capture a stiff, perfectly posed version of your family. My goal is to capture the real, messy, beautiful connection you share.
Here is how you can help nail your next family session and actually enjoy the process.
-Pick a palette: Choose 3 to 4 complementary colors, such as soft earthy tones, muted pastels, or rich jewel tones.
-Mix up textures: Combine knits, denim, linen, and corduroy to add depth and visual interest to your photos.
-Prioritize comfort: Make sure everyone can run, jump, and sit comfortably in their clothes without needing constant adjustments.
-Relax your expectations: If your toddler runs wild or refuses to sit still, don’t stress—that playful energy is exactly what we want to capture.
-Avoid forced smiles: Please don't command your kids to look at me and smile; forced smiles look tight and unnatural.
-Focus on each other: Instead of looking at my lens, look at your partner, tickle your kids, and enjoy being together.
A well fed and well rested family is the absolute secret weapon to a successful photo shoot (A special treat waiting in the car for after the session works wonders for cooperation.)
During our session I won't tell you to stand still and stare at me. Instead, I will give you fun and interactive prompts to trigger genuine laughter.
-Be ready to move: I might ask you to lock arms and walk together, or challenge your kids to a game of telephone.
-Lean into the chaos: If I ask you to squeeze into a tight group hug or start a tickle war, just go with it!
-Whisper silly secrets: Telling your child to whisper and/or you whispering their absolute favorite funny word into your ear creates the best expressions.
Make Sure You Check These Things Before the Shoot:
-Avoid Scrunchies or Hair Ties on Your Wrists: These can stand out too much.
-Check for Food in Teeth: or Around Your Mouth
-Ensure Clothing is Tucked In (this is mostly for men and their button up's)
-Steer Clear of Modern, Bulky Watches: They can stand out too much. Choose classic designs instead. (this is also mostly for men.)
-Empty Out Pockets: Empty those pockets, we see the item outline buddy!
